Biography

Elwes’s eldest brother died young, and he was returned to the Exclusion Parliaments for Sudbury on his father’s interest. He was classed as ‘honest’ by Shaftesbury in 1679, when his only committees were the committee of elections and privileges, and that to inquire into the decay of the woollen industry; but he voted for the bill. He was totally inactive in the next Parliament, but at Oxford he was again appointed to the elections committee. He made no recorded speeches. He was still alive on 13 Apr. 1686 when his father added a codicil to his will, but had probably died before James II’s electoral agents reported on Sudbury in September 1688.3
