Biography
Jones’s father, a lawyer of obscure family, was an active commissioner of array in the first Civil War, and compounded for £70 6s.8d. He married into an old Breconshire family, and became recorder of Brecon in 1650, MP for the county in 1654 and attorney-general for South Wales under the Protectorate. He was allowed to retain the recordership after the Restoration. Jones, also a lawyer, was returned for the county at a by-election in 1685, when the Marquess of Worcester (Charles Somerset) chose to sit for Gloucestershire. He was doubtless elected as a Tory, but he was probably totally inactive in James II’s Parliament. He was appointed mayor of Brecon under the new charter, but refused consent to the repeal of the Test Acts and Penal Laws and was removed from county office. He was re-elected to the Convention, in which he voted to agree with the Lords that the throne was not vacant. Otherwise he was totally inactive. He was replaced by the Whig (Sir) Rowland Gwynne at the next general election. He regained his seat in 1695, but refused the Association in the following year. He died in December 1696, and was buried at Llansantffraid. His son Roger was returned for the borough as a Tory in 1713, but became a Whig two years later.3
