Biography

Mainwaring, a Tory, defeated William Leveson Gower at Newcastle in the general election of 1685. His only committee in James II’s Parliament was on the bill for the general naturalization of Huguenot refugees. Although not originally mentioned in the warrant for the new charter, he became an alderman of Newcastle; but his relations with the corporation were not harmonious. He was removed from the bench ‘for threatening the company’, and had to be restored by order in council. In the following year he was elected mayor, but displaced after only two months in pursuance of James’s new policy of conciliating the Whigs. Nevertheless he consented to the three questions on the repeal of the Test Act and Penal Laws, and was made a deputy lieutenant. The Revolution ended the parliamentary record of the Staffordshire Mainwarings. Mainwaring became a nonjuror and died in December 1703.3
