Biography

On the death of a short-lived cousin, Tanner’s father succeeded to Courte, but showed no ambition to enter Parliament. In 1688 it was Tanner whom Lord Bath recommended as court candidate for Grampound, suggesting that he should be ‘treated with’ for his interest. Although struck off the freeman roll in June he was duly returned at the general election of 1689. According to Anthony Rowe he voted to agree with the Lords that the throne was not vacant. He made no recorded speeches in the Convention and was not appointed to any committees. After 1690 he usually voted with the Tories, but he signed the Association in 1696. He died in June 1699, the last of his family to sit in Parliament.3
