Biography
Archdale, who did not share his father’s Quaker outlook, was returned for Chipping Wycombe in his father’s place at a by-election in 1699. He was granted leave of absence on 4 Apr. 1699. With the sale of the family’s Buckinghamshire estates he did not stand again. His connexion through marriage with the Turners (his wife’s cousin was Charles Turner*), and subsequent residence at Stanhow, Norfolk, explain his commission in Roger Townshend’s newly raised regiment in 1706. However, after transferring to the Royal Fusiliers, he had left the army by March 1711. Archdale predeceased his father, dying on 9 Aug. 1711, aged 36, and was buried at High Wycombe.3
