Biography

A descendant of a family settled at Bochym since the reign of Elizabeth I, Bellot’s father farmed the tin coinage jointly with Samuel Enys† from 1661 till 1664 and was sheriff of Cornwall in 1692. Bellot himself was recommended successfully at Mitchell in 1702 by the returning officer, Sir Richard Vyvyan, 3rd Bt.* Bellot made little impact upon the records of the Commons and made no recorded speeches. He was forecast in October 1704 as a probable supporter of the Tack but did not vote for it in the division on 28 Nov. 1704. Presumably as a consequence, he was dropped by Vyvyan at the next election. Bellot then went on to spend all his estate ‘by riot and excess’, and died ‘of a fever’ early in 1710, leaving an only son who died two years later, when Bochym was sold to George Robinson* for the payment of Bellot’s debts.3
