Biography

Daniell was a minor at his father’s death in 1681, but was provided with a generous maintenance. He also had substantial connexions among north Wiltshire gentry, including his guardians Sir John Ernle*, Sir Henry Goodricke, 2nd Bt.*, and Thomas Fettiplace. This pedigree and local standing helped Daniell regain his father’s old seat at Marlborough at the second attempt in 1695, having been defeated by Thomas Bennet* at a by-election in January of that year. Forecast as likely to oppose the Court in the division of 31 Jan. 1696 over the proposed council of trade, he refused the Association, and subsequently voted against fixing the price of guineas at 22s. In the next session he voted against Sir John Fenwick’s† attainder on 25 Nov. On 13 Feb. 1697 he reported from the committee appointed to scrutinize the ballot for an accounts commissioner.2

Daniell died in London on 25 Apr. 1698 and was buried in Preshute church, where a plaque was raised to his memory, on 3 May following. His sister, the wife of Thomas Fettiplace of Fernham, Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, inherited the Preshute estate, which her son eventually sold in 1714.3
