Biography

Gott was returned at a by-election for Lewes in 1708 in place of his father, who had chosen to sit for Sussex. In Parliament he followed his father’s politics, voting in 1709 for naturalizing the Palatines in 1710, and for the impeachment of Dr Sacheverell. His record in the House is otherwise impossible to distinguish from that of his father. Gott does not seem to have found parliamentary life to his liking and did not put up again. Early in 1710 he and his father stood as joint security for his younger brother Peter, newly appointed receiver-general of taxes for East Sussex, but Peter never managed to balance his accounts and after the death of their father Samuel had to pay some £10,000 to the Treasury to cover his brother’s deficit. He sold the manor of Stanmer to Thomas Pelham* and made his principal residence at Crundall in Kent. He died in 1725, his will being proved on 19 Mar. of that year. His widow subsequently married Sir Roger Meredith, 5th Bt.†, and Gott’s estates eventually passed to his sisters.2
