Biography
A merchant whose principal trade was with Spain, Kekewich had lived in Puerto de Santa Maria but returned to England after the death of his first wife. He invested in the Old East India Company, subscribing £1,000 to its £200,000 loan in 1698, and was elected to the committee. His connexion with Sudbury, where he was returned unopposed in 1698, may have arisen from the fact that the cloth manufactured in the district was ‘chiefly shipped off for the Canaries, Spain and Portugal’, or he may simply have been brought in there on the interest of his parliamentary colleague, Sir Thomas Barnardiston, 2nd Bt. Marked as a query in a list of the new Parliament, he left little trace on the records of the House. Although forecast as a likely supporter of the disbanding bill on 18 Jan. 1699, he in fact voted against it.3
Kekewich died in January 1700 and was buried on the 25th at Hackney, beside his first wife.4
