Biography

A younger son, Manners followed his father’s Whig politics. He obediently signed the Association in 1696 in Leicestershire where Lord Rutland was lord lieutenant, and was returned to Parliament for the first and only time in February 1701 on the family interest at Grantham, apparently because Rutland objected on principle to two members of the Ellys family sitting at the same time. The same month Manners was included in a list of MPs likely to support the Court in agreeing with the supply committee’s resolution to continue the ‘Great Mortgage’. Granted leave of absence for 14 days on 29 Mar. 1701, he made little impact on proceedings. In November he pressed the 2nd Duke of Bedford, his sister-in-law’s brother and a gentleman of the bedchamber, to present Grantham’s loyal address to the King, and he may have considered standing again for Grantham but, if so, he desisted well before the elections in late November. He died on 29 June 1705 and was buried at Bottesford, Leicestershire.2
