Biography

Nicoll was returned for Tregony in 1708 on the recommendation of Hugh Boscawen II*, and soon demonstrated his Whig sympathies with his vote in 1709 for the naturalization of the Palatines. In April he reported, and carried to the Lords, a bill to enable guardians of infants to make conveyances, and on the 5th was a teller for engrossing a bill to make free two foreign-built ships. In the next session Nicoll supported the impeachment of Dr Sacheverell. His contribution to the business of the House remained slight, though on 23 Feb. 1710 he told in favour of engrossing the bill to build a dock at Liverpool, but on 22 Mar. was granted three weeks’ leave of absence. He did not stand for Parliament again, and in 1711 was removed from Cornwall’s commission of the peace. He died at Penvose in 1721, and was buried on 4 May at St. Tudy, Cornwall. Under his will his brother, as residuary legatee, sold the manors of Penvose, St. Tudy and Trehill to pay debts and legacies.2
