Biography

The Slingsbys, who were stalwart supporters of the Stuarts, had a strong electoral interest at Knaresborough, and had represented the borough since the 16th century. In May 1714, almost as soon as Henry Slingsby came of age, he was returned in an uncontested by-election for Knaresborough. He was classed as a Tory in the Worsley list. At the 1715 election, however, he was defeated by two Whig candidates. In 1720 it was reported that he was

wonderfully commended by all honest gentlemen in these parts for his great activity and zeal which of late days he has eminently shown in securing his interest in the borough of Knaresborough against all the united power of the Whigs, the court or even the South Sea itself.

At the 1722 election Slingsby was returned unopposed, and represented Knaresborough for the rest of his life. In common with his immediate forebears, he was considered sympathetic to the Stuart cause. He died on 18 Jan. 1763.2
