Biography

Backed by Sir William Robinson, 1st Bt.*, Thompson stood in opposition to his uncle Edward Thompson in a three-cornered contest at York in 1690. Robert Waller, a supporter of Lord Carmarthen (Sir Thomas Osborne†), was returned without dispute at the head of the poll but there was a double return of the two Thompsons, which, after Edward had petitioned against him, was decided in Henry’s favour on 17 May 1690. Despite their electoral differences, Henry was probably the ‘Mr Thompson’ who assisted his uncle Edward by speaking on 16 Dec. 1691 in favour of the bill to register servants going to the plantations; otherwise his parliamentary career is not distinguishable from those of his namesakes. In 1693 Samuel Grascome listed him on the Court side. He did not stand in 1695, probably making way for his uncle. Thompson was buried at Escrick on 6 July 1700.3
