Biography

James Brodie, of an ancient Elginshire family, was prominent on the government side in the Fifteen rebellion, defending his house against the rebels.1 His name was appended to the petition on behalf of Simon Fraser in his bid for full pardon and restoration to the lordship and estates of Lovat.2 Returned with the support of the Grant family for Elginshire at a by-election in January 1720, he died on 2 Oct. following of ‘a headache which put him in a fever. This proceeded from his old disease in the nerves which when it came to his head hath carried him off.’3
