Biography

Chute was the great grandson of Chalonor Chute, an eminent lawyer, Speaker of the House of Commons, who bought the Vine in 1653. After standing unsuccessfully for his county as a Walpole Whig in 1734, he sat for government boroughs in the Isle of Wight, voting regularly with the Administration till he retired from Parliament in 1747. On his death intestate, 20 May 1754, the Vine passed to his youngest brother, John Chute, the friend of Horace Walpole.
