Biography

The Dundases of Dundas had held their lands from the 12th century. George Dundas, backed by Lord Hopetoun,1 who at that time was attached to the Duke of Roxburghe,2 defeated the sitting Member for the county, Sir James Cunynghame, in 1722 but no votes of his are known for that Parliament. He did not stand in 1727. In 1734 he unsuccessfully supported Cunynghame against Hopetoun’s candidate, even petitioning in Cunynghame’s favour.3 Returned again unopposed in 1741, he voted against Walpole’s nominee for the chairman of the elections committee in December. A supporter of the new Administration formed after Walpole’s fall, he voted for the Hanoverians in December 1742 and was given a place the following April. Defeated at the ensuing by-election by Charles Hope Weir, the 3rd Lord Hopetoun’s brother, he did not stand again. He died in May 1762.
