Biography

George England was the grandson of a leading citizen of Yarmouth, Sir George England, who was knighted by Charles II in 1671. One of his uncles, George, was M.P. Yarmouth, 1679-81 and 1689-1701; another, Benjamin, 1702-5. In 1710 he was returned unopposed as a Tory for the borough, succeeding in 1711 to the fortune of his uncle Benjamin, who had inherited that of his uncle George. Re-elected without a contest at both the next two general elections, after 1715 he voted consistently against the Government. In 1722 he was overwhelmed by the combined Townshend-Walpole influence, coming out bottom of the poll. By that time he was so hopelessly in debt that after his death, 12 June 1725, his estates were sold by an order of the court of Chancery, and his descendants sank into obscurity.
