Biography

John Harvey Thursby’s great-grandfather, Robert Harvey, inherited in 1662 the considerable estates of his maternal uncle Hugh Audley, a moneylender. Of these Stockton was devised to John’s grandfather, another Robert, and Cole Park, in Malmesbury, Wilts., to his brother Hugh.1 After succeeding to Abington in 1736 he stood unsuccessfully for Coventry at a by-election in April 1737. Returned for Wootton Bassett as a Tory in 1741, he voted consistently against the Administration. He did not stand in 1747 but was returned for Stamford on Lord Exeter’s interest in 1754. He died 1 June 1764.
