Biography

Lade, a rich brewer in Southwark and a South Sea Company director, was returned unopposed in 1715, classed as a Whig who would often vote with the Tories. He voted for the septennial bill in 1716, but went into opposition with Walpole in 1717, voting against the Government in the division on Lord Cadogan in June that year. In 1719 he was absent from the division on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts, and voted against the peerage bill. He was defeated in 1722, but was returned at the top of the poll at a by-election two years later. He never stood again. In 1730 he was made a baronet, with remainder to his great nephew, John Whithorne, who took the name of Lade. He died 30 July 1740.
