Biography

Having made a fortune in India, Peachey returned to England about 1739, buying in 1743 an estate near Leominster for which he was returned in 1747, classed as Opposition. The second Lord Egmont wrote in his electoral survey c.1749-50:

James Peachey, if he lives, may probably be chose again, though he loves money and may decline a very hard contest. But I know him particularly well and should think him no bad man, though something will be expected to be done for one or both of his nephews, and a share of any subscriptions going forward for himself. And though he is naturally a republican Whig of levelling and wild notions of government yet this will not hinder him in the least from acting with us for reasons such as I have mentioned. I suspect that he designs if he can to try for his second nephew at this borough.

Defeated for Hereford in 1754, he did not stand again, dying 16 Feb. 1771.
