Biography

Great-nephew of Henry Rolle, M.P., lord chief justice, Rolle was returned for Callington on his family’s interest. No vote of his is recorded after 1715. A member of the October Club, reputed to be a ‘furious Jacobite’, he held in particular aversion his neighbour John Harris whom he called ‘the Hanover rat’.1 But after his death in November 1719 his widow married Harris, while his sole surviving daughter Margaret married Robert Walpole, later 2nd Earl of Orford.
