Biography

Sandford came of one of the most ancient families of Westmorland, which his ancestors had frequently represented. Returned as a Whig for the county before coming of age, he sat from 1713 for Appleby, where he owned 13 burgages.1 At George I’s accession he obtained a place, which he lost in 1717 for voting against the Government in the division on Lord Cadogan, thenceforth voting against them in all recorded divisions. On his death, 2 Apr. 1723, his estates passed to his sister, the wife of Robert Honywood.
