Biography
Wheate’s grandfather, William Wheate of Coventry, bought Glympton, four miles from Woodstock, in 1633.1 Returned for Woodstock as a Whig in 1715, he voted with the Administration in every recorded division. According to Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, he would ‘not have been chose at Woodstock but for the Duke of Marlborough, who paid all the expense for him’ and saved him ‘from great distress by giving him a place in the Ordnance’ in 1717.2 He died 25 Aug. 1721.
