This county, the second largest in Scotland, was dominated by the Campbells and their allies. There was no contest throughout the period, and all the Members were of the Campbell clan.
The Argyll freeholders never wavered in their loyalty, but William Adam remarked in 1788:1
The greatest part of them have very near connexions in the army or navy. Many of them are active enterprising men, desirous of promotion and the Duke, it is thought, would be in a very troublesome situation unless he was acting with the Administration.
