b. Apr. 1732, 4th s. of Sir Gilbert Elliot, 2nd Bt. M.P., and bro. of Sir Gilbert Elliot, 3rd Bt. unm.
Entered R.N. 1745; lt. 1756; capt. 1757; r.-adm. 1787; v.-adm. 1790; adm. 1799.
Gov. Newfoundland 1786.
Elliot owed his promotion as lieutenant to the influence of his brother, who was now in Parliament, and through him was introduced to Sir James Lowther who brought him in for Cockermouth. In 1768 he contested Carlisle as one of Lowther’s candidates, but was defeated, and does not seem to have stood again.
His only reported vote was with Administration on the land tax, 27 Feb. 1767. There is no record of his having spoken in the House.
He died 20 Sept. 1808.
