Biography

Monckton joined the East India Company’s civil service as a writer at Madras in 1762, serving in India till 1778 when he retired and returned to England. He now purchased the estate of Somerford in Staffordshire, and at the general election of 1780, standing jointly with R. B. Sheridan, topped the poll at the venal and expensive borough of Stafford.

In Parliament Monckton voted constantly with the Opposition till the fall of North; voted against Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783; for Fox’s East India bill, 27 Nov. 1783; and regularly against Pitt. There is no record of his having spoken in the House before 1790.

Monckton died 1 July 1832.
