Biography

The Stuarts of Tilliecoultry were distant cousins of Lord Bute, on whose accession to power James Stuart was appointed to the command of the newly raised 97th Regt. When James Stuart Mackenzie secured his election for Ross-shire, Bute returned Col. Stuart for the family seat, probably in absentia. He died in London 7 Feb. 1762,2 so little known to his English contemporaries that the Court and City Kalendar and the London and Gentleman’s magazines in their obituary notices confused him with the Hon. James Stewart of the 37th Ft.
