Biography

Fitzroy served at Corunna, in the Walcheren expedition and subsequently, with credit, in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. He then served with the army of occupation in France. In 1818 he replaced his uncle John as Member on the family interest for Thetford. He was committed to opposition and signed the requisition to Tierney to be their leader in the House after the election. No speech of his is known in his first Parliament, and after taking two leaves of absence for illness he did not appear in a minority list until 6 May 1819, when he voted for burgh reform. After another week’s leave for illness, he voted for Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May. He went on, in June, to oppose the foreign enlistment bill at every stage and ministers’ tax proposals. He voted for Burdett’s motion for parliamentary reform, 1 July. During the next session he was in the minorities on the address and Althorp’s motion, 24, 30 Nov., against the seditious meetings bill, 2, 13 Dec., the seizure of arms bill, 14-16 Dec., and the newspaper stamp duties bill, 20 Dec. On 13 May 1820 he joined Brooks’s Club. He died 17 June 1865.
