Biography

In 1816 Lygon, who had distinguished himself in the Peninsular war, succeeded his eldest brother unopposed as county Member. Like him he supported the Liverpool administration. He opposed Catholic relief, 9 May 1817. Having voted for the suspension of habeas corpus, 23 June 1817, he sided with ministers on its modus operandi, 10, 11 Feb., 5 Mar. 1818. He appeared on the Treasury dining list and was summoned to Fife House to hear Lord Liverpool’s justification of the ducal marriage grants, which he went on to support, 15 Apr. 1818. He was one of the lobby of inland Members who opposed the equalization of the coal duties, against which he presented a petition from Bewdley, 4 Mar. 1819. No other speech is known before 1820. He voted against Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May, and for the foreign enlistment bill, 10 June 1819. He died 8 Sept. 1863.
