Bailiff, Wallingford Mich. 1397-8.2
Oxenford, a shoemaker, is frequently mentioned in the records of the borough court of Wallingford, where he served as a juror and was frequently amerced for selling shoes at excessive prices.3 He sometimes witnessed local deeds, and in 1387 served as a member of a jury testifying to the value of the estates pertaining to the honour of Wallingford. Ten years later, a few months after his last known appearance in Parliament, he was elected as one of the town’s bailiffs. Oxenford was wealthy enough to employ a chaplain who, however, was no credit to his calling, for he was involved in a number of affrays in 1401.4
