Biography
Chapman was heir to a wealthy London merchant family, whose trading interests had drawn them from Shropshire to London by the early seventeenth century.1 Returned as an opposition Whig for Taunton in 1741 after a contest, he voted against the Government till 1746, when he voted for the Hanoverians. He did not again seek re-election. In 1757 his house in Hertfordshire was attacked by an anti-militia mob.2 He died 29 Jan. 1781.
