Biography
Ogle came of a Drogheda mercantile family with an income of about £3,000 p.a. Like his father he sat for Drogheda before the Union. In 1802, despite Castle support, he was defeated in a contest for the seat and withdrew a petition against the return on the understanding that he would be given an opening at the next election. In 1806 he was duly returned unopposed. Despite their initial doubts about him he gave a silent support to the ministry and on 9 Apr. 1807 voted for Brand’s motion against their successors. At the ensuing election he was defeated.
In 1812 his successful opponent Foster connived at Ogle’s unopposed return, provided he supported government except on the Catholic question. Ogle was as good as his word, although the chief secretary suspected that his real inclination was towards opposition. While he invariably voted for Catholic relief, he was a fairly steady voter with ministers, except that he was in the majority against them on the Duke of Clarence’s establishment, 15 Apr.; six days later in the minority for the repeal of the Irish window tax, and against extending the forgery prevention measures to all negotiable instruments, 14 May 1818. His only speech, 11 Feb. 1818, was to sponsor a bill to license gaming houses, of which he complained that there were at least a thousand in London, but it was frustrated eight days later. Ogle survived a keen contest in 1818 when he maintained his understanding with Foster. He appeared in the government majorities of 29 Mar. and 10 June 1819. He did not offer in 1820 and died 18 Feb. 1823, ‘aged 60’.
